Why are pit bull bites so dangerous?

Although any dog could act aggressively, pit bulls have a reputation as the breed most likely to attack. Although not every pit bull is a dangerous dog, individuals are right to be wary of any animal that makes them uncomfortable.

These are some reasons why you may want to steer clear of this dog breed if you have a fear of an attack:

Personality

WebMD reports that pit bulls are often aggressive toward other dogs, which creates a hazard if you encounter this breed while walking your own pet. In addition, the breed can be especially tenacious, which means they work hard to meet a goal. While this can be a good quality, it can also be dangerous when the animal feels threatened. Pit bulls may grab with their strong jaws and shake their prey.

Breeding

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, today’s pit bulls descend from the English bull-baiting dog. As its name suggests, this type of dog keeps bears and bulls at bay. In the late 1800s, the dog owners began pitting the dogs against one another and crossed them with terriers to improve speed, athleticism and agility. All these qualities make pit bulls a threat to humans and other animals.

While states may not ban ownership of specific dog breeds, cities and towns can make their own breed laws. In Michigan, the following municipalities have a pit bull ban or restriction:

  • Bessemer Township
  • Carson City
  • Dearborn Heights
  • Ecorce
  • Grosse Pointe Woods
  • Hartford
  • Highland Park
  • Kingsford
  • Lapeer
  • Melvindale
  • Orchard Lake Village
  • Saginaw
  • Southgate
  • Sylvan Lake
  • Tawas City
  • Waterford Township
  • West Branch
  • Zilwaukee

Regardless of the type of breed, Michigan holds a dog owner liable if the dog attacks a person without provocation. Victims may sue for medical costs and other financial damages associated with the incident. However, they must take legal action within three years of the bite to have a case.
